Full Electrical 3 Phase Service Upgrade for Thornleigh Property – New Private Pole, Underground Mains and Main Switchboard + Smart Meter
Our client in Thornleigh, located in Sydney’s Upper North Shore, required a comprehensive 3 Phase electrical upgrade to allow for a higher current carrying capacity to allow for new EV charging, Battery system and Solar. In doing so we had to also address a major compliance issue. The existing single-phase aerial mains were crossing a neighbour’s property — a serious defect that posed safety risks and did not meet current standards.
This residential project involved a full-service upgrade, including installing a new private pole, a 3-phase power supply underground, and a complete switchboard replacement to bring the property up to Australian Standards.
The Challenges
The property faced several challenges that needed immediate attention:
- Single-phase aerial mains were crossing into the neighbour’s property, breaching regulations.
- The existing infrastructure was outdated and non-compliant.
- The limited power supply was not sufficient for the client’s growing needs.
- Safety concerns due to defective installations and ageing equipment.
- Asbestos was present, requiring careful and safe removal.
Our Solution
Our licensed electricians at Scott Electrics delivered a complete and professional electrical service upgrade, which included:
- Installing a new private pole to rectify the cross-boundary defect and establish a compliant aerial connection.
- Upgrading to 3-phase aerial mains, replacing the non-compliant single-phase system.
- Running new 3-phase consumer mains (16mm 4-core XLPE) in heavy-duty conduit from the private pole to the main switchboard underground.
- Installing a new main switchboard, equipped with:
1] Surge Protection Devices (SPD/MPD) for service and meter protection.
2] A new 3-phase smart meter for accurate and future-ready energy monitoring.
3] New RCBOS safety switches for every circuit to enhance protection.
4] current-limiting protection/circuit breaker main switch to manage load safely. - Upgrading the earthing system, including a new earth stake and water pipe bonding, to ensure complete safety and compliance.
- Safely removing asbestos to meet health and safety requirements and deliver peace of mind.
